OBJECTIVES:
After reading the blog, you must be able to;
1. Identify the different types of matter,
2. Differentiate between a pure substance and a mixture, and
3. Classify things as pure substance and mixture.
4. Test out these three mixtures to see which form solutions and which don’t.
Matter is something that occupies space and has its own mass. It is something that can be felt by us. Some examples of matter are air, water, food, table, pen, gold, sand, fruits, plants, trees, bottle, plastic, stones, oil, fan, chair etc. All these things occupy space and have their own masses. Both, living things and non-living things are matter. The entire universe is composed of matter. Moreover, matter is anything made of protons, neutrons, and electrons. It can be divided into 2 groups, Pure substance and mixture.
a. Elements - Simplest form of a substance which cannot be decomposed into simpler substances by chemical action
b. Compounds - combination of two or more elements, can be decomposed into simpler substances
Mixture can be separated into two or more substances by physical means; has no definite properties.
a. Heterogenous can be classified into colloid and suspension
Colloid- particles do not settle at the bottom upon standing
Suspension- particles that settle at the bottom upon standing
b. Homogeneous also called as solution, you can't distinguish the components.
Aim: To test out these three mixtures to see which form solutions and which don’t.
